The album consists of outtakes and alternate versions of previously released songs, which were recorded between Autumn 1967 and Spring 1968. The cover for the UK issue was designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis. It was released in the United States in 1973 with the title Autumn to Spring and different cover art. This compilation covers the Nice's earliest recordings, made from autumn 1967 to spring 1968, before wild guitarist Davy O'List left the group. It features the single version of America, and the B-side Diamond Hard Blue Apples of the Moon, and remixes of six of the eight songs on the Nice's first album, The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack. Also included is a previously unavailable early version of Daddy, Where Did I Come From, which the band later re-recorded for their second album. In 1969 when Tony Stratton-Smith signed the Nice to the Charisma label, he probably did not anticipate the fact that they were in the process of breaking up. The result was two patchwork albums of live tracks and left over studio sides some of which were clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel. Autumn to Spring sounded better than greatest hits and I figure the execs thought that sneaky ploy might trick some into thinking this was a new recording so, voila, this collection that relied heavily on their first album's material 6 out of the 9 cuts taped between Fall '67 and Spring '68 showed up in the platter bins. At the same time it's easy to see why Keith Emerson would feel limited by this environment and eventually break free to scale the heights of rock stardom alongside Greg and Carl but it's obvious that he cut his sharp teeth on the tough chew toy that was The Nice in the late 60s and I sadly regret not discovering.
