The Haters are a noise music and conceptual art troupe from the United States. Founded in 1979, they are one of the earliest acts in the modern noise scene. The group is primarily the work of the Hollywood, California-based musician, artist, writer, and filmmaker GX Jupitter-Larsen, accompanied by a constantly changing lineup of other members, usually local experimental musicians and artists in whatever town a Haters performance happens to take place. Side 1 has two long tracks on it, the first being “Siba” - high machine noise type of thing, very convincingly sounds like an electric generator. It seems to be on the verge of feedback and only by supreme effort manages to avoid plunging into that particular screaming void. “Sityr” follows, clattering in like an Army ‘quick-marching’ on wooden legs, transforming itself, on the cassette, or merely in my mind, into some kind of information gathering machine, working flat out, heading towards oblivion.
Side 2 begins with “Sipa”, which sounds not unlike a snatch of human voice, looped and echoed into such a dense rhythm that its impossible to penetrate and see what it’s all made of. Microtonal changes and the occasional soaring flange add slight flecks of colour change. The second track, “Sion” see-saws in and out of sync like some early STEVE REICH experiment, with single note keyboards instead of microphones & amps. It forms acceptable rhythms at random, which then fall into chaos of chance, or so it seems. The last track on this side, and indeed on the whole cassette, is “Sisu”, which is a lot more complex sound, a lot more atmospheric. lmagine standing in some underground, or enclosed railway station, it’s ceiling lost in smut-black firmament, imagine an endless train passing at a passive speed over on the next platform, its wheels shrieking metal pain as it moves forever onwards, maybe to some innocent destination, maybe to the world beyond this. This then is the track which finishes the tape.

I can’t really say I like THE HATERS, although they are capable of some impressive sounds. I liked it better the second time I heard it, and more so the third. You can find yourself drifting along with their sound, although it’s by to means an easy journey. If the review interests you, give it a go.
