Every time I use the style "Indie Rock" on a Discogs submission I think how sad it is that that's become a style at all, let alone that it's almost a two-word bad review (comprising a lot of other two-word bad reviews: no songs, no personality, overly-earnest, not sincere, art-studenty, try-hard, half-baked, sounds like …, etc.)

This, however, is indie rock only because it's so hard to pigeonhole. It’s definitely --- not to mention defiantly --- independent and it’s definitely not jazz, classical or bossa-nova, so ... it’s indie rock. Amateurish in the best way, the sound constantly about to fall apart, a haze of cheap trebly guitars, noisy, loose, jangly, fragile, but with a dark electric hum as an undercurrent.

It's probably from 2002 or so, and the band was from Queensland, Australia (home of the Go-Betweens, who might well be a backhanded influence), but it could come from anywhere, any time post-The Velvet Underground. This could be one of those gorgeous and mysterious New Zealand bands from the mid-80s that weren't on Flying Nun like Wasp Factory or The Riptoids or Wild Poppies or Drone. It might have come out on Postcard Records in 1981.

Obviously it loses a point or three in collector desirability for being released on CDr and not vinyl, but that really shouldn’t affect an appreciation of the music one bit. Are you really interested in music purely as an investment?

I bought this for $1 in a pawn shop. A win for the shoestring gourmet! There’s apparently another CD single that I’d be very interested in tracking down.

I got nowhere researching this. I'm not sure whether the Steven Smith that plays on this is the one in Queensland band The Scul Hazzards.
