Notes

Tom Moulton did create the 12 minute mix, but it wasn't completely mastered yet and not officially commissioned for any release,
but in fact was pressed without consent by Victor Rosado

"Promotional Not For Sale" on label is part of a bootleg gimmick; this is not actually a promo nor an official release at all.

Un-official remix of the 1980 classic.
Alternate un-released extended mix.

One-side 33.3 RPM pressing, with labels on both sides of the vinyl.

looking for a good copy... please dm me , thanks
SkroN
it wasn't mastered yet and not commissioned for release....one of his EX-friends who had privy to the track sold it to Half Moon for their bootleg.....as a result Tom does not speak to the asshole anymore.....it was not really finished. not mastered and I think Tom only gave him an mp3...so that's why the poor quality

Yo! I'm looking for a copy... holler at me.

Kinda wish I read the reviews before buying my copy, but don't regret picking mine up. Isn't the worst sounding thing but isn't amazing either. If you kinda like the charm of what a bootleg record usually sounds like - raw, little bit low fi but this pretty loud bass and kinda shrilly highs - then you'll like this one. Again, not upset at the record but I wish I paid half of what I did, which was thirty bones.

My pressing sounds fine. Fantastic Tom Moulton MixGets regular play out on a big system from me.

The vinyl quality and pressing quality of the unofficial 12"s of the Tom Moulton mixes of I Need You and Free Man are poor-to-awful when played on an audiophile-grade system, assuming you are not suffering from hearing loss. They sound so bad that I returned them to Vinyl Mania the following day after buying them. I can easily live without them. The I Need You remix is good, but it is way too long and it starts to drag after a while. A remix in the 7:30 range would have been more concise.

Just dug my copy out of storage based on the rave reviews posted here. My copy is a terrible pressing, muddy with distortion on all the high parts. DJ-Raus seemed to be getting at this in his review/post. Consequently you couldn't play this in a club. Do clean pressings exist?
Akirg
Clean pressings do not exist. The I Need You and Free Man remixes both sound terrible, which is why I returned them for a refund. I can easily live without them :-)

The mix itself is not that good sonically. I love Tom but this is not his best work.

Just because "many people want it and are willing to pay $$$ for it" still does not mean it is any good. Bottom-line, the vinyl quality, recording quality and pressing quality of the I Need You and Free Man remixes suck big time. Any objective, experienced clubber / DJ / collector with an above-average sound system and any personal standards for buying music does not want them.
Conjuril
Over the years I've heard a few people complaining about the sound quality but there is a reason why many people want and are willing to pay $$$ for it.

Utterly amazing alternate mix of one of Sylvester's greatest LP cuts. The original LP version clocks in around 4:40, a bit too short for club play: Larry Levan and all the other old-school masters used to work 2 copies of the LP to extend it and repeat the best parts. ALL the original elements are still here in this mix. The bass guitar and kick drum are much more prominent, and the entire track sounds rawer and more "LIVE". To my ears it's an alternate take that was probabably considered too raw for the final release, and definitely too long for inclusion in the original LP. The big bonus here is that Martha Wash and Isora Armstead were the background singers. In THIS amazing take, the Two Tons really wail away for the rest of the song, and for all intents and purposes this is as much a Two Tons O Fun record as a Sylvester record: A must-own for Martha Wash and Sylvester completists for certain! The sound quality is not as good as either the original or Megatone versions, but it's still pretty good. Some tape-saturation and other distortions are obvious, but not annoying. It sounds like it's many generations away from the original studio tapes, possibly sourced from an acetate or cassette tape. Buy this while you can...before Fantasy sends the distributor a cease-and-desist "nastygram"!

Not an alternate of anything. Mixed in 2005 by Moulton, as evidenced by the harsh high frequencies.

Tom Moulton did an extraordinairy job on this classic from Sylvester from the late 70's/begin 80's. This sounds so different when comparing with the original mix. More bass, cripsy clear shakers, hard percussion. It's hardly a disco track anymore. Yes, it has a 4/4 backbeat but it's purely a cohesion between funk & gospel (notice the background choir). And that bass ! You can't sit on your chair when hearing this mix. 10 outta 5, no doubt about it. Grab it while u can.
