Album

Einstein on the Beach is an opera in four acts framed and connected by five knee plays or intermezzos, composed by Philip Glass and directed by theatrical producer Robert Wilson who also collaborated with Glass on the work's libretto. The opera eschews traditional narrative in favor of a formalist approach based on structured spaces laid out by Wilson in a series of storyboards. The music was written in the spring, summer and fall of 1975. Glass recounts the collaborative process: I put Wilson. Music and Lyrics by Philip Glass Robert Wilson, Design & direction The Philip Glass Ensemble Michael Riesman, conductor. Nonesuch 79323-2. Einstein on the Beach brought the composer fame - and notoriety. It was presented throughout Europe in the summer of 1976, then brought to the Metropolitan Opera House for two sold-out performances in November 1976. Then, as later, audience response was mixed Glasss works were presented to boos and bravos. Jane Herman, the presenter responsible for bringing Einstein to the Met, has vivid memories of her first encounter with the GlassWilson opera. Opera in four acts by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass. Premiered on July 25, 1976 at the Festival dAvignon, Avignon, France Premiered on December 11, 1984 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York Premiered on July 24, 1992 at the McCarter Theater, Princeton, New Jersey Premiered on March 17, 2012 at the Opéra Berlioz - Le Corum, Montpellier, France. Einstein on the Beach breaks all of the rules of conventional opera. Instead of a traditional orchestral arrangement, Glass chose to compose the work for the synthesizers, woodwinds and voices of the Philip Glass Ensemble. Act I, Scene 2: Trial Part 2 feat. Philip Glass. Einstein On The Beach 4xCD, Album. Sony Classical. SMA4K87970. Glass avoided all vestiges of plot in the piece and dug deep into his quiver of repetitions to create an artfully unnerving five hours of brilliance. This title I bought in 1979 as a 4 LP-album, right after its original release. It is one of the milestones of modern music. Hypnotic, repeated phrases faaa-faaa-faaa-faaa do-re-mi-la-ti-dodo-re-mi-la-ti-doone-two-three-four-five-sixone-two-three-four-five-sixone-two-three-four-five-six. interchanged by beautiful, romantic melodies with a dominant role for the violin. The recording of the original production of Philip Glass' and Robert Wilson's Einstein on the Beach has iconic significance both in the development of the musical style unfortunately known as minimalism, as well as in the history of music in the late twentieth century. It was a watershed moment when Glass and his ensemble brought the nearly five-hour opera to the Metropolitan Opera House in 1976 his unique aesthetic convictions moved from the rarefied atmosphere of loft concerts into the face of the classical music establishment in a way that could not be ignored.
