The Ravesignal series of release are a great example of some of C J Bolland's bets work and this 12" doesn't disappoint, "Horsepower" is the standout track and its a brute of a tune with its hard industrial driving rhythms. Huge tune back in its day and still sounds great.

A. Mindwar.B1. Horsepower. Both tracks are original and inventive, making sophisticated use of swirling synths and filtered vocal samples - but Mindwar has the edge for rave dancefloors. Horsepower is darker and its teutonic kick marked the beginning of the move of rave towards hard trance.

Horsepower was the killer on this EP for me. Many of times ive heard this absolutley smashing up the place. Basically people going " Off It". Im sure if you went clubbing in the North West or Centre of the country you will know exactly what i mean. Rocking Tune!

Interesting that Mindwar was the A-side, I am guessing Reneet thought it was the strongest track. I should also mention that the mixing & mastering is excellent.

Horsepower was written after Bolland had been on a TGV for the first time.

Absolutely super release music today just isn't the same nor the synthesisers nor the sounds of this area R&S had some remarkable releases back in the day Mind War and the Exclusive Remix are my picks perfection!!

A dark destroyer of a track. 'Mindwar' that is. This has always been the standout track for me and on its release was the best R&S release to date. This was what techno was all about in 92. We still had to put up with tracks like 'Dominator' which is seen by many as a classic but the real deal is here. All force and no gimmicks. This is the stuff that paved the way for his later release 'The Fourth Sign' which sold many copies. Horsepower, the title track is also a massive classic on the dancefloors of 92 and is reminiscent of 'Spring Yard' on 'The Fourth Sign'. Very hard ,driving techno that was guaranteed to either lift you or squash you. Either way, this EP has the desired effect of brutal early nineties techno done how it should be done. R&S artists really were leading the way in that year and not many came close. You have to remember that this was the year Aphex made his debut with Didjeridoo, CJ had 'The Fourth Sign' and 'The Source' brought out his 'Organised Noise' LP. All top of the range acidic techno with intelligence to boot. Recommended for any collector of innovative techno classics.

What can be said about this amazing EP to do it justice? "Horsepower" remains to this day, one of the genre-defining tracks in Dance music - very hard to create a sound quite unlike anything before or since. I remember returning from an allnighter in Dec '91 to put on my headphones, taking turns to play each side of this EP whilst avin' it large in my bedroom as i had earlier in the night. I could still do it now...respect Mr.Bolland!

I remember hearing this playing at Berlin nightclub for the first time. We were all asking "what is this (amazing) tune!!??!!!". A mate of mine said "i think it's called Bassline". I was so blown away by it and I just had to know for sure what it was so I bolted across a packed dance floor, bolted upstairs, burst through the door of the DJ booth and shouted to Darren Briais "what's the name of this tune???". Darren, in the middle of mixing in the next tune (whoops, bad timing), holds up the cover of this particular release. I've never forgotten that moment nor that tune. Pure energy, Techno in its purest form. Oh the memories. What an era!

The original pressing on R&S had a gorgeous cover of C.J Bolland's face broken up by lines. According to him it was representative of how he felt at the time due to the burn-out he was experiencing at this stage of his career. Later re-issued on R&S UK with a mellow mix of "Horsepower"
