The Graveyard and the Ballroom is the debut album by English band A Certain Ratio, released in December 1979 by record label Factory. It was produced by Martin Hannett. It was originally released only as a cassette, though it was reissued in 1985 on CD. The reissued album spent five weeks in the UK Independent Chart, peaking at number 29. Side A of the album, The Graveyard, was recorded at Graveyard Studios in September 1979, while the other side, The Ballroom, was recorded live at the Electric. A Certain Ratio are a post-punk band formed in 1977 in Manchester, England. One key difference is that A Certain Ratio has a more pronounced funk influence, which makes their music more danceable. Another difference is that Topping's lyrics, more abstract and even humorous albeit in a dark, quirky way are less dramatic than Curtis'. The Graveyard and the Ballroom, compiled from a collection of early four-track recordings and a set of live tracks, shows off A Certain Ratio's strengths well.
